In the Libertarian College at Looney Tunes University the Exalted Supreme Wise and All-Knowing strongly assert equal and independent individuals (like me and maybe you) enjoy the sacred and undeniable fact of absolute Liberty without which life is not worth living and happiness is impossible. They grandly assert that individuals always have free choice—if caught in a corner not unlike the free choice the Nazis graciously provided the Jews (change your DNA or die).

In America the Highly Profitable Sin Enterprise Sector with full complicity of Government holds most fervently and patriotically while fully enraptured within the folds of the American flag that:

I have mentioned in past blogs two nagging conundrums.  One is that introduced by my son’s Imam in one of his addresses at mosque services.  Im
am Wilmore Sadiki had recently read a book called Crossing the Road. In summary he reported the book detailed the lives and behaviors of certain key figures in several widely diverse religions.  The thing all these leaders had in common was their proactive determination and willingness to “cross the road” (ideological, experiential, cultural divides) to meet others.  What was the yeast that made such behavior remarkable and powerful?

Marvin Sweat a retired United Methodist minister was well into his 90’s when he and I would run errands on Saturdays.  We often would breakfast in popular restaurants, visit his tailor, stop by his dry cleaner, or shop for groceries at Publix.  Our time together was always filled with my wonderment how he could strike up a conversation with total strangers whom after a few minutes of ice-breaking remarks would be willing to voice for my friend's consideration some major perplexing and/or painful personal challenges. 

This evening Connie and I were having dinner at Kristina's Cafe.  A gracious young waitress named Tia today cracked the riddle that has haunted me for years.

After pulling up a chair to talk with us a minute, Tia contributed the key observation that a sense of equality is spawn from informal, individually focused conversation. At its best, this conversation holds as pure happenstance and irrelevant any lurking hierarchical power while eliciting a compelling sense of mutual equality in which cagey and defensive small-talk rings sour and inappropriate.  Equality becomes well-neigh reflexively the governing tone whose powerful currents permit honesty within a shared vulnerability.

So, at last I now understand the operative factor for Marvin.  It was an impelling sense of shared equality that subliminally communicated “You can trust me…I am a fellow mortal and will not be scandalously shocked nor will I judgmentally shun you aside for voicing your current perplexities.

God as a Mob Boss

Like most folks, my view of Christianity is heavily influenced by my years as a child and youth growing up within local churches.  I must say at the outset that whether in a more rural or municipal setting, discussions of ethics focused upon our direct call to responsibilities as individuals and as Christians.  Whether merchants, teachers, or farmers, the question was always how we could contribute towards realizing a more abundant life in all its dimensions in the broadest possible way.

I knew even then that Christianity could take a turn towards emotional fanaticism—with "End-Timers" being peculiarly suspectable to an ugly indulgence in self-righteousness twisted together with a “burn-baby-burn” mentality towards remaining humanity.  These groups evinced utter confidence that (despite Jesus’s advice that only God knew when that date would come) the End-Time was indeed here, that they themselves were safely within the mob boss's favor, and that all others would writhe in pain and destruction—while they themselves (being in the strong mob boss’s good graces) would reap the rewards of triumphant gang loyalty.

This is totally antithetical to my view of Christian ethics.  We are to serve as a creative and redemptive force often in a very local and specific sense.  But even on the world stage, we are never to exalt in the rending of civilization into smoldering heaps of ashes. We mortals are to do what we can to help advance societal health; and not to gleefully anticipate the suffering retribution of the great-unwashed less-worthy-than-we ourselves.
