Modest Modernity

[Moses said] If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God: (Deuteronomy 28:1-2  (NIV)).

David’s Last Words

“The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me;
    his word was on my tongue. (2 Samuel 23:2 (NIV)).

------------------------------------------------

Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.  (Jeremiah 1:9 (NIV)).

------------------------------------------------

And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. (1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NIV)).

Not heard today from the mentally stable:

I speak for God.

Today my point is a simple one – in modern times unlike in the Bible, no mentally stable person claims to speak for God.  They may witness to the Word, but with a signal caveat – "May you remember the words I speak today that further the kingdom of God, and may you set aside and forget forever those words I speak today that do not further His kingdom."  [Words very similar to this were always offered in prayer by David Miller just before his sermons  at First United Methodist, St. Petersburg, Fl].
